10 years ago I took a punt. I took what felt like a huge risk, leaving my job in the third sector with no role to go to, but knowing something needed to change.
What started with a few months out of work on a career change programme, led to spending the year challenging myself and learning what I was capable of, both physically and mentally. By undertaking a series of events, all of which involved micro-risks, I built confidence and learnt that resilience can be developed, that strength comes in many forms and that determination helps to achieve more than anticipated.
Over the course of that year I learned so much more about risk than I expected; I learnt about resilience, community, strength, determination, drive, passion and the joy of spending time outside.
That initial 3 month break turned into the most enjoyable and rewarding year of my life, none of which would have been possible had I not decided to take that initial risk.
So here I am, once again, taking a significant risk. I’ve stepped away from full time employment, to establish myself as a consultant and set up my own company, 5143North.com. I’ve come to understand that taking risks like this is never ‘easy’ – it’s daunting and intimidating, and might not lead to the success I am currently striving for. But, and it’s a big but, it might – it might lead me in directions I can’t imagine right now, to opportunities that are unknown to me. What success looks like will no doubt change and evolve as I navigate my way forward. The one thing I am confident in and sure of, is that I have to try. Here is an opportunity that is mine for the taking – it’s about taking that risk, seizing an opportunity and seeing where it leads.
